Learning Journey to Orchidville














































Hi, 5A! Look at the pictures that we took yesterday:) Please share ONE key takeway from the learning journey. I hope to get varied responses... so no duplication, please.

  5. I learn about our national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim has 3 petals, 3 sepal and one stricture. Also, the smallest flower is so small that we need to use the magnifying glass!

  7. I learnt that the column of the orchid contains anther cap, stigma, column foot and ovary. I also learnt that orchids have many different kind of colours.

  10. I learnt the uses of orchid flowers like,decors,medicine and perfume. The Learning Journey really proved its worth to teach and amaze me.They even gave us free notes ws to help us make orchid flowers into decors!I could not wait for the orchid flower decors that we made yesterday to come next week.:D

  11. I learnt that the world's smallest orchid is just 2.1mm wide.The petals are so thin that they are just one cell thick and transparent. The largest orchid in the world is known as the tiger orchid.Its yellow colored flowers with dark red spots got it the name the “tiger orchid”, which can grow up to 13 inches in diameter.

  12. I learnt that we can preserve flowers that can last for years by the oven-run method. We need to select a good bloom in order to make it look good. I think that this is a very useful way to preserve flowers as we can make other things such as bookmarks. I think that my favorite flower is the Orchid because it is beautiful and it is our national flower's "family member".

  15. I have learn how intesting and how amusing is orchid. Orchid can always produce new type. It also has male and female parts in one. Some even looks like human or animals such as dancing lady, Roman hetmet...

  16. Orchids have funny looks and funny names.The pollination of a orchid involves with a wasp that is fooled. I found it's process amazing. Orchids can be used in many ways. Exp:decoration,herbal tea, perfume and many more...Orchids has something that all flowers do not have.The female and male fuses together.
    Orchids are our national flower as it adapts to the surroundingin Singapore. :p

  17. I learnt that acid is used to change the colour of the orchids to red and alkaline is used to change the colour of the orchids to blue.

  18. I have learnt that orchids come in different colours and there is even an orchid which is black!There are also >100,000 registered hybrids and 3,000-5,000 new hybrids every year! When I found out this fact, I was so shocked!

  23. I learnt that some orchids have a fake wasp on them. They use the fake wasp to help them for pollination. When a wasp goes out to look for another wasp to mate with, it is then fooled by a fake wasp on the orchid. The real wasp lands on the fake wasp to mate and then bounces onto the orchid and the wasp is then filled with pollen grains. When the real wasp flies away, the pollen grains land on another orchid and fertilisation begins.

  30. I learnt that the three factors to enable a flower to remain in its colour forever is to remove the water in it, dry it to make all the cells in it die and block the flower from UV light
